Studies on Detoxicating Effects of Pyridoxine,Retinyl-Acetate and Methionine on the Toxicity of Polychlorinated Biphenyls

Abstract
|
|
|
The effect of Pyridoxine(VB_6), Retinyl-Acetate(VA), Methionine(Met) on toxicity of Polychlorinated Biphenyls(PCB) were examined and the following results were obtained.
PCB, an environmental pollutant was administered intraperitioneally two times.
1. Rats which were administered PCB showed decrease of body weight, while the weight of liver was increased in comparison with that of control group. However, these rats when pretreated with VB_6, VA, VA+Met showed increase in body weight and decrease in liver weight.
2. Rats which were pretreated PCB showed decrease of hemoglobin centent. However, these rats when pretreated VB_6, VA,VA+Met showed recovery in hemoglobin content. Pretreated with Met combined with VA proved to be most significantly effective.
3. Serum cholesterol levels in rats were also hightened nearly twofold due to the toxicity of PCB. However, the pretreatment with VB_6, VA, VA+Met resulted in lowering of serum cholesterol levels.
4. All the enzyme were markedly increased in PCB-intoxicated rats. The activites of serum GOT and GPT were significantly stimulated by PCB and their stimulation was inhibited by the pretreatment with VB_6, VA, VA+Met. Futhermore, the stimulation of the activity of ALP by PCB was also inhibited by pretreatment of VB_6, VA, VA+Met. Combined pretreatment with VA and Met resulted in almost complete recovery.
